Woolstone Farm Joneses

Posted in Family History on May 18th, 2009 by admin – 2 Comments

Now that I have confirmed that Leah’s parents were actually James and Phoebe Jones, I can start to find out a little more about Leah’s parents and siblings as I’m sure some of the photos that I have relate to their families.

In the 1871 census, William Jones is at home with his parents and siblings living at Woolstone Farm, St Clears. The 1861 census for St Clears is missing. I suspect that William could have been born after the 1851 census as I cannot find the family on that return.

William must have died between 1901 and 1911 as he disappears from the census returns.

Anne Jones, born 1852 Carmarthenshire

In the 1871 census, Anne Jones is at home with her parents and siblings living at Woolstone Farm, St Clears.
It is difficult to pin down a marriage for Anne Jones but possibilities include William Evans and David Davies.

Now to find the siblings of Phoebe Jones:

William Scowsfield/Sconsfield Jones born 1887 Lawrenny, Pembrokeshire
Martha Jones 1876-1880 Llandewy Velfry, Pembrokeshire
Phoebe/Pheobe/Phebe Ann/Anne/Annie Jones born 1878-1888 – Llandewy velfry, Pembrokeshire
James Melbourne J Jones 1880-1882, missing from 1911 census

William Scowsfield/Sconsfield Jones born 1887 Lawrenny, Pembrokeshire
Born April/May/June 1887
Married April/May/June 1917 to Minnie J Tuffin in the Risbridge district of Suffolk
I can find a Minnie Jessie Tuffin born within the Risbridge district during 1885. From the 1901 census it looks as though the Tuffin family were living at New House Farm in Poslingford. Her parents were Frederick and Emma originating from Sudbury and her siblings were Willie and Marian. All of the Tuffin children are shown as being born in Haverhill.
Phoebe’s marriage also took place in 1917 (October)
I can find the following children born to William and Minnie within the Risbridge district:
Frederick Jones Oct/Nov/Dec 1921
William Jones Oct/Nov/Dec 1921
Mary Jones July/Aug/Sep 1923
Jessie Jones July/Aug/Sep 1927
Henry Jones Jan/Feb/Mar 1929
(Female) Jones Jan/Feb/Mar 1929 Deaths (Female) Jones Jan/Feb/March 1929
Elizabeth Jones Jan/Feb/Mar 1931

Martha Jones 1876-1880 Llandewy Velfry, Pembrokeshire
Unable to find any additional information currently.

Phoebe/Pheobe/Phebe Ann/Anne/Annie Jones born 1878-1888 – Llandewy velfry, Pembrokeshire
Married George Williams at Poslingford in October 1917.
Phoebe and George had a son William G S Jones born in April/May/June 1918. Sadly he died shortly after birth.
George Williams senior died 0n 21st June 1929 at the age of 67. There is a photograph of his grave at Stansfield amongst my Great Aunts photograph collection. It states that George was from Flax Farm, Poslingford. I assume that it could be Phoebe standing beside the grave.

Williams Grave Stansfield
Williams Grave Stansfield

James Melbourne J Jones 1880-1882, missing from 1911 census
Born April/May/June 1880
Possibility that he emigrated to Australia as I can find a James Melbourne Jones on the Australian Electoral Roll in 1919 and 1924.

Scourefield Success

Posted in Family History on May 15th, 2009 by admin – 1 Comment

I typed David Rowland Scourefield (one of the witnesses and the George Williams and Phoebe Jones marriage) into the search engine on a genealogy search engine. To my amazement, not only was he listed but there were also a couple of photographs posted by one of his relatives as well as a family tree which confirms that David Rowland Scourefield was a son of Nathaniel Scourefield and therefore a cousin of the bride Phoebe Jones (her mother Elizabeth being Nathaniel’s sister). Hoorah – I also think he is one of the faces on the photograph. He was born in the 1890s so I think there is only one candidate on the photograph that fits the bill. I have contacted the person that posted the photographs and can’t wait to hear back.

Hopefully 3 faces down, 5 to go! No bad for a photo we knew nothing about just a few weeks ago.

Some faces have names

Posted in Family History on May 15th, 2009 by admin – 1 Comment

After a few weeks of researching I do believe that some of the faces in my 1917 Flax Farm Wedding photograph now have names.

Wedding at Flax Farm Poslingford 1917

I am sure with a fair degree of certainty that this is the wedding of George Williams and Phoebe Annie Jones. After ordering their marriage certificate, all of the details check out. The date is correct, the location is correct and the names written on the back of the photograph match up. The next step was to find out how they are connected to my known family. I felt sure that the connection must be through Phoebe Annie Jones as my Great Great Grandmother was Leah Jones. However, Suffolk is a long way from South Wales where the Jones family are known to have originated.

After much head scratching and careful scanning of records I am sure that Phoebe Annie Jones was in fact a niece of my Leah Jones, being the daughter of Leah’s brother William Jones. By the time of the 1917 wedding, both George and Phoebe’s fathers were already deceased so there are additional people in the photograph to name. There are three witnesses listed at the wedding: William Scowsfield Jones, David Rowland Scowsfield and Margaret Jenkins. I would assume that some, if not all, of these witnesses are on the wedding photograph. William Scowsfield Jones was a brother of Phoebe Annie Jones and David Rowland Scowsfield must be connected through Phoebe’s mother as her maiden name was Scowsfield

In the 1871 census, William Jones is at home with his parents and many siblings living at Woolstone Farm, St Clears.

My next challenge was to try and research more about this branch of the family in order to put more names on the faces of the photograph, given these facts:

Parents
Elizabeth Scowsfield/Sconsfield, born 1849-1852 – Llandewy Velfry, Pembrokeshire
William Jones born 1849-1852 – Llanginning, Carmarthenshire, died before 1911

Children
William Scowsfield/Sconsfield Jones born 1887 Lawrenny, Pembrokeshire
Martha Jones 1876-1880 Llandewy Velfry, Pembrokeshire
Phoebe/Pheobe/Phebe Ann/Anne/Annie Jones born 1878-1888 – Llandewy velfry, Pembrokeshire
James Melbourne J Jones 1880-1882, missing from 1911 census

Now, let’s see if I can find births, marriages and deaths for these folks.

Elizabeth Scourfield – there are two births recorded for Jan/Feb/March 1849 and Jan/Feb/March 1850. I have found her on the 1871, 1861 AND 1851 censuses living in Llandewi Velfrey with her parents William and Martha. I also found Elizabeth’s parents on the 1841 census.

William Jones and Elizabeth Scourfield were married within the Narbeth district during Jan/Feb/March 1875. I believe that Elizabeth died as Elizabeth Jones in 1913 in the Risbridge district. Her death occurred before the 1917 marriage and so she would not be one of the faces on the photograph. William’s death is proving harder to track down as there are many possibilities.

Whilst I’m on the Scourfield/Scowsfield scent maybe I can find this David Rowland Scowsfield who is one of the witnesses at the wedding. He does not appear to be one of the brides mothers siblings as I had first imagined.

Slowly catching up with the Joneses

Posted in Family History on May 11th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

I ordered the birth certificate for Leah Jones and David William David married in 1883 and sure enough, Leah’s father is shown as James Jones (a farmer).

This all seems straightforward and I had assumed that the three Jones sisters we visited in Wales had made an error with the names of their Great Grandparents. Simply that they should be James and Phoebe Jones rather that John and Mary Jones. This seemed fine until I read through the notes written by my Great Aunt Dorothy. She also wrote that her Great Grandparents were John and Mary Jones. How could two sets of people who did not know each other come up with the same incorrect name for their Grandparents? The only additional clue that Dorothy gives is that Mary’s maiden name was Howell. Let’s see if that turns out to be true.

Given that Leah is confirmed as a child of James and Phoebe Jones, that means that they had at least 14 children. One died a few days after birth and another died at 4 years old.

The 1861 census for St Clears is missing but I should be able to track the family down on other census returns.

12 Children and counting!

Someone kindly did a look up on the 1871 census for James and Phoebe Jones who I suspect are possibly the parents of Leah Jones:

JOHN, Mary Servant F 23 1848 domestic servant Carmarthenshire
MORRIS, Catherine Servant F 17 1854 domestic servant Carmarthenshire

Address:
Woolstone, St Clear County: Carmarthenshire

If Leah is also their daughter, this means they had at least 12 children! We were told by the three sisters that we visited in Wales over 20 years ago that there were 5 – Leah, Howell, John, Jane and Miriam. In the 1871 census, Leah is shown as living close by but with her Uncle. She is aged 12 at this point so there does appear to be a slot for her in the list of children above. Interestingly, they also have a nephew, Howell Evans with them as well as a 75 year old tutor. I am sure this is the right family for Leah Jones as not only is the address correct but also her nephew Ira Jones (son of Jane) was born at Woolstone in 1896.

Back to Backe

It’s been nagging away at the back my mind that there were two Jones families living in the St Clears area at the time my family were there. So maybe John and Mary living at Backe St Clears are my Great Great Great Grandparents after all and it’s just that their children share some of their names with the Jones family living at Woolstone. Possibly the siblings of Leah Jones have left home by this point and are just living elsewhere. Let’s see if I can find them:

- Leah
– Howell
– John
– Jane
– Miriam

I’m beginning to think that these notes written by Elizabeth, Sarah and Muriel Jones in 1986 were actually wrong. Maybe they confused the names of their Great Grandparents and instead of being John and Mary, they should actually be James and Phoebe. I guess only looking at some earlier census returns will get to the bottom of this one.

Mmmm

So apparently Leah was also living with her Uncle and Aunt Thomas in the 1871 census. Did she spend at least ten years living with them?
